Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon apple extract
- Red and green food coloring
- Royal icing for decorating
Instructions:
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt
In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy
Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and apple extract until well combined
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a dough forms
Divide the dough in half
Add red food coloring to one half and green to the other, kneading until the colors are well incorporated
Wrap the two colored doughs separately in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour
Preheat the oven to 350F 175C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper
Take a small amount of each colored dough and roll them into small balls
Place the balls side by side and gently press them together to form apple-shaped cookies
Use a toothpick to create a small indentation at the top of each cookie for the stem
Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely
Once the cookies are completely cool, use royal icing to decorate them with apple designs and patterns
Allow the icing to set before serving and enjoying
